The Watercolor Biennial of Greece

OPEN CALL


The Biennial Exhibition "Watercolor International" (WI) started in 2012 in Thessaloniki. 30 artists from abroad and Greece participated in the first exhibition.

That was a great success. Five more exhibitions followed (2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 and 2023) with more and more artists from all over the world.

The artists were very carefully selected and invited. 

The aim was to bring together works from the world's most famous and successful watercolorists. 

Initially WI was an invitational-only exhibition. Later an Open Call was introduced, to give the chance to more talented artists to participate.

Thessaloniki was now at the center of activities and exhibitions of Watercolor in the world.

This year, the 7th edition of WI features 150 painters.  

Given the high level of participating artists, WI is established as one of the most important exhibitions for the best watercolorists from all countries.

Various techniques and approaches are exhibited, even different forms of watermedia on paper. Thus, the exhibition presents a "mosaic" of techniques and views of contemporary watercolor.

30 artists will be selected through the open call to exhibit in EMS Gallery, Thessaloniki

and

an additional number of artists will be selected to be presented on the wall screen of the Gallery 

(in a parallel - digital exhibition of works)

MATTHEW BIRD AWS, NWS

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Matthew graduated with honors from the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000. He is a Signature Member of numerous organizations, including the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society, where he served as vice president. His award-winning watercolor paintings have been exhibited in juried shows across the United States, as well as in Canada, China, England, Greece, Hong Kong, and Italy. His work is in museum and private collections. New Century International Watercolor Curator. Once a watercolor lecturer in the Department of Business Design at the American Cultural University. Has been invited to Taiwan, France, Poland, USA, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Spain, Mexico, Greece, Russian Federation, Moscow, and China, nearly 70 international exhibitions, 76 solo exhibitions, and nearly 300 joint exhibitions at home and abroad.  2012 Indonesia International Watercolor Tour Invitational Exhibition (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Sony Bali.) Received the 2012 China Nanjing International Watercolor Painting Outstanding Artist Gold Medal.

Herman Pekel

Born in Melbourne in 1956 of Dutch parents, Herman was 17 when he held his first solo exhibition in Melbourne: it was a sell-out success. He spent three years studying and painting in Amsterdam and London, where he encountered the works of Constable, Turner and Rembrandt. These impressed him and influenced his own work. On returning to Melbourne in 1982 he began studying for his fine arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Dale Hickey, Jeff Makin and Clifton Pugh are just a few of the contemporary artists under whom Herman studied and who were instrumental in cultivating his appreciation of contemporary art, as well as experimentation with abstract impressionism. His tonal works, in oil and watercolour, range from city and landscapes to café and bar interiors to dynamic industrial scenery. They all demonstrate the very best of contemporary impressionism.
