Karen Schaaf NWS

Karen Noll Schaaf uses transparent watercolors to express the beauty of the human experience and to capture the unique moments of life.

Her most recent accolades include an Award of Excellence at the 2023 Watercolor International VI in Thessaloniki, Greece. She was chosen to represent the USA team at the FabrianoinAcquarello International Watercolor Congress.  Nationally, Karen was juried into both the 2023 Watercolor USA National exhibit, andthe 2023 Southern Watercolor Exhibit.

An internationally award-winning artist and instructor, Schaaf has earned her signature status in the National Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, the Georgia Watercolor Society, and the Watercolor Society of North Carolina.

Karen earned her Fine Arts degree at the University of Maryland, and her master’s degree in Instructional Design at Virginia Tech.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Matthew graduated with honors from the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000. He is a Signature Member of numerous organizations, including the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society, where he served as vice president. His award-winning watercolor paintings have been exhibited in juried shows across the United States, as well as in Canada, China, England, Greece, Hong Kong, and Italy. His work is in museum and private collections. Has been invited to Taiwan, France, Poland, USA, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Spain, Mexico, Greece, Russian Federation, Moscow, and China, nearly 70 international exhibitions, 76 solo exhibitions, and nearly 300 joint exhibitions at home and abroad.  2012 Indonesia International Watercolor Tour Invitational Exhibition (Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Sony Bali.) Herman Pekel

Born in Melbourne in 1956 of Dutch parents, Herman was 17 when he held his first solo exhibition in Melbourne: it was a sell-out success. He spent three years studying and painting in Amsterdam and London, where he encountered the works of Constable, Turner and Rembrandt. These impressed him and influenced his own work. On returning to Melbourne in 1982 he began studying for his fine arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Dale Hickey, Jeff Makin and Clifton Pugh are just a few of the contemporary artists under whom Herman studied and who were instrumental in cultivating his appreciation of contemporary art, as well as experimentation with abstract impressionism. His tonal works, in oil and watercolour, range from city and landscapes to café and bar interiors to dynamic industrial scenery. They all demonstrate the very best of contemporary impressionism.
