I fell in love with watercolour when I was younger and my mom proudly stuck the onion she had just painted in her watercolour class on the edge of the mirror in the kitchen. The delicate blending of colours, subtle differences in value, alluring negative work and glimmering transparency fascinated me. I have been painting ever since.

I love to take risks, to provoke those accidents that this wonderful medium has to offer. However, I do not leave everything to chance and plan my compositions, looking for balance through the use of value and colour.

I enjoy mixing the figurative with the abstract, often suggesting still life shapes, nature or animals, inviting the spectator to finish the story that I started. I prefer to work from my imagination, interpreting nature, drawing from my memories and sensations of past experiences. I am interested in art that shows the artist's vision of the world as they see it.

For me, painting with watercolours is a never-ending adventure and a never-ending love affair!

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Matthew graduated with honors from the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn, New York, in 2000. He is a Signature Member of numerous organizations, including the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society, where he served as vice president. His award-winning watercolor paintings have been exhibited in juried shows across the United States, as well as in Canada, China, England, Greece, Hong Kong, and Italy. His work is in museum and private collections. Herman Pekel

Born in Melbourne in 1956 of Dutch parents, Herman was 17 when he held his first solo exhibition in Melbourne: it was a sell-out success. He spent three years studying and painting in Amsterdam and London, where he encountered the works of Constable, Turner and Rembrandt. These impressed him and influenced his own work. On returning to Melbourne in 1982 he began studying for his fine arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Dale Hickey, Jeff Makin and Clifton Pugh are just a few of the contemporary artists under whom Herman studied and who were instrumental in cultivating his appreciation of contemporary art, as well as experimentation with abstract impressionism.
