Anne Hightower-Patterson AWS, TWSA
Her art collection vividly captures the essence of her Southern roots, portraying soulful African American subjects, sun-drenched landscapes, and luminous still lifes.
Born in South Carolina, Anne’s artistic journey started at the age of 12 when her school introduced art programs, sparking her creative spirit.
Anne completed her BFA in Studio Art from the University of South Carolina in 1972 and followed it up with a master’s degree in education in 1975. Retiring after 29 years in public education, she now dedicates herself full-time to her art studio, teaching workshops across South Carolina and the Southeast. Her dual background in art and education makes her an in-demand instructor and juror.
Her artwork has been showcased in the “Splash 16, 17, and 18: The Best of Watercolor” series in consecutive years from 2015 to 2017. Her piece, “Fishermen’s Tales,” appeared in Watercolor Magazine’s April 2016 issue, marking her second feature in their Watercolor Showcase. In 2016, Watercolor Magazine recognized her as one of the “Ones to Watch,” a feature spotlighting 10 rising watercolor artists in the U.S., following her nomination by renowned watercolorist Linda Daly Baker.
In 2022, she achieved her long-time goal of becoming a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. As a celebrated artist, she has been the subject of multiple articles and books, including a recent feature in Fine Arts Connoisseur Magazine’s American Masters Series. In early 2023, her painting “Contemplation” won the Over 60 Competition by the Artist Magazine.
Signature Memberships: American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, SC Watermedia Society, Watercolor Society of Alabama, Mississippi Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society, Louisiana Watercolor Society, and the esteemed Rocky Mountain National Watercolor, along with other state organizations.
